Guest Scholarship Program for Master’s level studies in Sweden

The objective of the scholarship program is to promote democratic, economic and social development through supporting know-how and transfer of knowledge to advanced students within areas in which Sweden is at the forefront of academic research.

Countries
The program is targeted at candidates from the following countries: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Brazil, Burkina Faso, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Macedonia (FYROM), Georgia, Ghana, India, Jordan, Kenya, Kosovo, Lebanon, Mali, Moldova, Rwanda, Senegal, Serbia, Syria, Tanzania, Turkey and Uganda.

Eligible master's programs
A list of master's programs eligible for SI scholarships will be published on the website on December 15.

Important dates
The online application service for Swedish master's degree programs opens on December 1 at www.studera.nu/english. Deadline for applications for most master's degree programs is January 15.

Application for SI scholarships can only be made after you have been accepted on a Swedish master's program on the list above and must be followed by an admission confirmation from www.studera.nu

Instructions concerning the scholarship application procedure and an online application form will be published on the website in April 2009.

The result of the application procedure will be announced at the SI website www.si.se and www.studyinsweden.se at the beginning of June.

Visa and residence permits
SI scholarship holders are given priority in the visa and residence permit procedures at the Swedish Migration Board. Visas are free of charge for SI scholarship holders.

Scholarship benefits and period
The scholarship amounts to SEK 8,000 per month and is only awarded for programs starting in the autumn semester 2009. The scholarships are usually granted for one academic year, i.e. for two semesters at a time, but will be extended providing the study results are satisfying.

Scholarship holders enrolled for:
• One year master's level studies will receive funding for 10 months starting from the autumn semester 2009.
• One and a half year master's level studies will receive funding for 17 months starting from the autumn semester 2009.
• Two year master's level studies will receive funding for 22 months starting from the autumn semester 2009.

How to apply
Application instructions for SI scholarships for the academic year 2009/2010 will be available on www.studyinsweden.se in April 2009.

Who is eligible?
The scholarships are intended for guest students belonging to the above-mentioned target group for full time temporary studies in Sweden. There is no age limit for scholarship holders.

You are not eligible for this scholarship if any of the following is true:
• You have already lived in Sweden for two years or more when the scholarship period is due to begin.
• You have a Swedish permanent residence permit or a work permit.
• You have a previously been awarded a scholarship from the SI for studies at master's level or research at a Swedish university.

Students who have attended a Swedish Institute summer course in the Swedish language or the Swedish Institute Summer University are welcome to apply.

Travel grants
Scholarship holders from ODA countries will receive travel support in connection with the scholarship. The travel grant is a lump sum, given only once. Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia (FYROM), Kosovo, Moldova, Serbia, Turkey and receive SEK 4,000. Citizens from remaining prioritized ODA countries receive SEK 10,000.

Insurance
Scholarship holders are insured by the Swedish State Group Insurance against illness and accident during the scholarship period.

Scholarship limitations
The scholarship is designed to cover the living costs for the scholarship holder. There are no grants for family members.

Kindly observe that scholarship holders following a two year master's degree program are only permitted to go abroad within their studies, for at the most one semester with retained SI scholarship. The granted scholarship period cannot be altered or extended.
