Our objective

Goethe University’s Master scholarship programme is a groundbreaking project, and unique in the academic landscape of Germany. For a period of five years (2016-2020) we will be offering 20 scholarships per year for various MSc and MA courses with a special emphasis on research. If your primary motivation is research, come and join our highly international research community!
We are seeking outstanding candidates who are interested in joining one of our MA or MSc programmes, which are deeply embedded in our strongest research units (Centers of Excellence, collaborative research centers, and LOEWE CENTERS). Please visit our website for more information on the various Master's degree programmes (content, requirements, language of instruction etc.) supported by Goethe Goes Global
The purpose of the scholarship is to foster your academic career, to enable you to become involved in existing research projects and to actively support you during your Master’s degree studies. A Master’s degree is the prerequisite for starting a PhD in one of Goethe University’s seminal research units.

Our vision

Innovation takes place beyond the boundaries of disciplines and cultures, therefore internationalisation lies at the core of Goethe University’s efforts in research and teaching. We believe this is the right response to global challenges.
The German business newspaper Handelsblatt dubbed Goethe University the ‘magnet on the Main’ back in 2010, because of its strong appeal to academics from outside Germany. Increasingly, international researchers are being drawn to Frankfurt as a result of its growing academic reputation and its national and international research centres. Among the most important research areas are Oncology, Neurosciences, Macromolecular Complexes, Cardiovascular Research, Cell and Gene Therapy, Biodiversity and Climate Research, (Heavy Ion) Physics, (Sustainable Architecture for) Finance and, in the Social Sciences, the Formation of Normative Orders.
Today, Goethe University ranks among the top ten in external funding and among the top three largest universities in Germany, with three clusters of excellence in medicine, life sciences and the humanities

Deadlines and results

The scholarship deadline is the same date as the application deadline of the master's programme you apply for, i.e. you shouldsubmit your application for the degree programme and for the scholarship at the same time. For example, if you apply for Mathematics and the application deadline is August 31, the deadline for your GGG Scholarship is also August 31.
Please note that each master’s programme has its own application deadline and it is subject to change. Therefore, please pay close attention to the deadline of the specific programme you’re applying for.
You will be informed by the end of September if your application was successful.

How to Apply

Because the scholarship application is a part of the master's programme application, you must first start an application for your desired programme. Please click on your desired programme on this page. The column to the farthest right indicates the application procedure for each programme: most programmes require an online application via uni-assist and some require you to apply directly through the responsible department, e.g. GSEFM (see submission rules here). This means you either follow procedure number 1 or number 2 down below, depending on the programme you choose.
1. For programmes that require an online application via uni-assist, the scholarship application is found within the master's programme application. All required documents for the scholarshipapplication must be submitted online. No hard copies neccessary! All the required documents for the master's programme application must be submitted online and sent to uni-assist in Berlin as hardcopies.
OR
2. . For programmes that require you to apply directly through their department, you can submit your scholarship application along with your master's programme application to the department. However, please make sure to inform yourself by visiting the programme's webpage to know for sure if they have specific instructions for the scholarship application.
Required Documents
  • motivation form (please use the provided template!)
Please write about your prospective academic study plan and your academic ability. In addition, elaborate on your principle research interests. In case you want to be involved in a research unit, please check if the master’s programme of your choice is affiliated with one or more research units. See list here. If your desired programme is on this list, please inform yourself about the available research unit(s) and mention the one that is most suitable for your research interests in your application. Note that not all programmes are affiliated with a unit, which means involvement with a research unit is unfortunately not always possible.
  • comprehensive CV
Please submit it in tabular form (if a CV was already submitted with the master’s programme application, you do not need to hand in another one)
  • Two recommendation forms
They must be filled out by professors or other academic staff. Please use the provided template for the recommendation forms. Please make sure they are signed by hand and stamped with an official university seal. After they are signed and stamped, the letters of recommendation may be scanned and included in the application material you submit to uni-assist (in case uni-assist is not in charge of your programme please send it to the department; see GU-Master’s portal). It is not necessary for your referee to write a recommendation letter.
Please note that as part of the application process, we will conduct a video interview in August or September.
If you have already applied for a master's degree programme and the application deadline has not passed yet, you may log back into your master’s programme application account on the Online Application Portal website and opt to additionally apply for the Goethe Goes Global scholarship.
For more questions regarding the application process and general information please have a look at the FAQ-section.

Why study for a Master's degree?

A Master’s degree programme – generally a two-year course, both at Goethe University and elsewhere in Germany – enables you to expand and deepen the knowledge you have gained at undergraduate level. A Master’s degree provides in-depth education which will enable you either to enter the professional job market or to continue studying towards the next level of academic degree: a PhD.
To qualify for admission to a Master’s programme at Goethe University, you must have already completed a Bachelor’s degree (or another programme at an equivalent level) in a relevant field, and have passed the selection process of the respective programme.
Please check which Master degree programme you are interested in and whether you meet the application requirements, such as language skills, academic background, etc.

Attention: Please note that certain Master's programmes are embedded in research units. If you apply for a Master's programme you may consider becoming involved in one of the research units (more info in application section).
