The Graduate School of Economic & Social Sciences is offering 11 internationally competitive and research-oriented PhD programs in business, economics and social sciences.
The PhD programs are full-time and last, depending on the program, between three to five years. All of our programs are designed to prepare you for an academic career at leading international universities and research institutions. Center for Doctoral Studies in Business
The Center for Doctoral Studies in Buiness (CDSB) administers the PhD program at the Business School of the University of Mannheim.
The CDSB is supported by the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state governments and by private donors.
The PhD program is taught and administered in English. Admission is based purely on merit and open to excellent students holding either a four year Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree. Admitted students receive a scholarship and there is no tuition fee. CDSB students are financed by a scholarship during the first 14 months (1.200 €/month) of their studies. Afterwards students are either funded by a continuation scholarship or teaching/research assistantships at the University of Mannheim. Students are also encouraged to actively pursue external funding options themselves.

The CDSE is supported by the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state governements and by private donors, including generous support by the Fontana Foundation. The PhD program is taught and administered in English. Admission is based purely on merit and open to excellent students holding either a Bachelor or a Master degree.
Admitted students receive a scholarship and there is no tuition fee. CDSE students are financed by a scholarship during the first and the second year (1.200 €/month) of their studies. After the two year course phase, students are either funded by a continuation scholarship or teaching/research assistantships at the University of Mannheim. Students are also encouraged to actively pursue external funding options themselves.
Center for Doctoral Studies in Social and Behavioral Sciences
The Center for Doctoral Studies in Social and Behavioral Sciences (CDSS) administers PhD programs in Political Science, Psychology and Sociology in close collaboration with the School of Social Sciences at the University of Mannheim.
The CDSS is supported by the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state governments and by private donors. The PhD programs are taught and administered in English. Admission is purely based on merit and open to excellent candidates holding either a Bachelor's or a Master's degree.
Admitted students receive a scholarship and there is no tuition fee. CDSS students are usually financed by a scholarship during the first year (1.200 €/month) of their studies. After the two year course phase, students are either funded by a continuation scholarship or teaching/research assistantships at the University of Mannheim. Students are also encouraged to actively pursue external funding options themselves.
Admission to the GESS programs
The admission to our full-time PhD programs is taking place on an annual basis.

Applications for the programs starting in September 2015 can be submitted until March 31.
We offer only online application.
Early Applications
Applications handed in before:
- January 15 (Economics - CDSE)
- January 31 (Business - CDSB)
- February 15 (Social Sciences and Behavioral Sciences - CDSS)
will be treated as early applications and decided on before the official deadline.
Applications from candidates who are no accepted in the early round will be reviewed again with all other applications after March 31.
General Information
Admission to our programs is highly competitive so we encourage you to thoroughly familiarize yourself with the contents of our website. This will help you prepare the best application possible.
In general, the prerequisite for admission is either a bachelor's or a master's degree (or an equivalent) in the respective field. Applicants from neighboring fields can be admitted if the academic background is judged to be sufficient.
