Information sessions for this program will be held on February 18-20 at the U.S. Embassy. Session are open to the public and due to limited seating, are on a first-come, first-serve basis. Each session will last three hours and applicants should only attend one session. Please note large bags, briefcases, phones, cameras, cigarette lighters, weapons and other electronic items are among things not permitted into the Embassy. The International Fulbright Science and Technology award is for Ph.D. study at top U.S. institutions in science, technology, or engineering. The program is funded by the U.S. Department of State, which encourages scientists from around the world to study in the U.S.

Approximately 40 awards will be competed worldwide for candidates who demonstrate unique aptitude and innovation in scientific fields. The United States remains the most attractive destination for serious scientific and technological research and study. The Department views this program as an important step to sustain that position. The International Fulbright Science and Technology Award reaffirms America’s pre-eminence and competitiveness in the fields of science, technology, and engineering. The International Fulbright Science and Technology Award was first announced at the U.S. University Presidents Summit on International Education in January 2006.

Winners of previous awards came from over 30 countries (with all world regions represented) and represent a wide variety of fields in science, technology and engineering, including biology, computer science, mathematics, mechanical engineering, neuroscience, and physics. Thirty-five percent of the winners were women. Recipients were chosen through a rigorous, multi-tiered, merit-based selection process consisting of in-country competition and review, field and discipline merit review by top-level U.S. academic leaders, and nomination by a blue ribbon Advisory Panel, which includes university deans and presidents. Final selection was made by the Presidentially appointed Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. Winners in previous years were placed at leading universities including Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Stanford University.

The U.S. Embassy is now soliciting nominations for candidates to participate in the 2009 International Fulbright Science and Technology Program. Grantees will be enrolled for Ph.D. study at top U.S. universities in the fields of science, technology, or engineering for academic year 2009-2010. The International Fulbright Science and Technology Award is a worldwide program.

Eligible fields include: aeronautics and astronomics/aeronautical engineering, astronomy/planetary sciences, biology, biomedical engineering, chemistry, computer sciences/engineering, energy, engineering (electrical, chemical, civil, mechanical, ocean, and petroleum), environmental science/engineering, geology/earth and atmospheric sciences, information sciences and systems (engineering focus only), materials science/engineering, mathematics, neuroscience/brain and cognitive sciences, oceanography, public health (theoretical research focus only) and physics. The Office of Academic Exchange Programs in the U.S. Department of State will fund grants for up to three years for this award. After three years, U.S. universities will be expected to cover the remaining expenses toward completion of a Ph.D. Placement of students will be handled by the Institute of International Education (IIE).

Applicants must be residents and citizens of Tanzania and must apply through the U.S. Embassy’s Office of Public Affairs in Dar es Salaam. Applicants must have completed an undergraduate degree and be eligible for a doctoral degree before August 1, 2009, and be proficient in English. The best applicants work for institutions that are contributing to Tanzania’s development in science, technology and engineering and who work in hard sciences. This program is not for simple theoretical study. Successful candidates are usually scientists who are leaders in their respective fields and people who are making a difference in Tanzania and have the support of their employers to apply for the program. In addition, candidates should have strong inter-personal skills and the ability to share Tanzanian culture with others. Short-listed candidates will be required to sit for TOEFL, GRE and when necessary, GRE Subject Tests.

Only short-listed candidates will be contacted for an interview that will take place in early May. Short-listed candidates will be asked to sit for appropriate tests and complete other necessary paperwork and will then be nominated for the worldwide competition. IIE will be responsible for placement of all Fulbright Science and Technology Award recipients. IIE will work closely with the recipients and the U.S. State Department to ensure the best placement available for field of study and research interests.

All grantees receive tuition, a monthly stipend for up to 36 months, health and accident coverage, a book and equipment allowance, professional conference allowance, travel support, and specially tailored enrichment activities, and are eligible to apply for additional research funding. After three years, U.S. universities will be expected to cover the remaining expenses toward completion of a Ph.D.
