ERASMUS MUNDUS Msc in PHOTONICS, Belgium

Introduction

Five leading research and educational institutions in Europe are collaborating to offer a joint Erasmus Mundus Master of Science program in Photonics, providing a top-quality eduction in all aspects of photonics. The master programme has a duration of two years (120 ECTS points), with students spending a year in two different countries.

Photonics
Photonics is now widely recognized as a major innovation enabling discipline for the 21st century. It can be defined as that field of science and technology where the fundamental properties of light and its interaction with matter are studied and applied.


Scholarships
Full scholarships are available for non-EU students to cover the tuition fee and all living expenses(24000€/year).

Limited scholarships available for EU students (10000€/year). Other grants for EU students are also available


Erasmus Mundus Scholarship
Per academic year a number of Erasmus Mundus scholarships are available for EMMP non-EU (category A) students.

This is a scholarship for 4 semesters of 48000 euro which will be paid on a monthly base and which includes the yearly tuition fee of 7000 euro to cover expenses, like subscription fees, insurances and administration.


For the academic year 2010-2011, the consortium can select a total of 19 students, including 2 students under the "Western Balkans and Turkey window" (see below), to be granted a scholarship. Without prejudice to the respect of high academic standards, in order to ensure a geographical balance across third-country students, the EMMP consortium shall respect the following basic criteria when selecting third-country students:

no more than 2 of the selected third-country students should come from the same country.


Admission criteria

The Erasmus Mundus MSc in Photonics offers admission to applicants who appear to have the highest potential for graduate study and who, with the benefit of a graduate education, are the most likely to contribute substantially to their academic or professional fields through teaching, research, or professional practice.

The minimum graduate admission requirements are:

A bachelor's degree or recognized equivalent from an accredited institution (minimum 3 years full time study or 180 ECTS credits) in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Physics, Materials Science or a related discipline. Students in their last year of such a bachelor programme will however also be considered.

Sufficient English language ability. The following shall be accepted as sufficient proof:

the prospective student has already successfully completed a one-year English-language study programme, either at a different institution of higher education or at a secondary school;

a TOEFL-TEST, taken as recently as within the last two years, showing a score of at least 570 (paper-based) or 87 (internet-based)

an original "test report from" (TRF) from IELTS, issued as recently as within the last two years, showing a score of at least 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 per each part
If prospective students hold a secondary education diploma, an academic Bachelor's diploma or a Master's diploma awarded by an educational institution that is duly recognised by the Flemish Community, no proof of sufficient English language ability must be provided.

Candidates will be ranked according to the criteria given below:

Obtained degrees. Applicants are recommended also to provide additional information (short course description, course credits,…) on the courses they have taken during their previous studies, especially in the fields of applied mathematics, electromagnetics, optics, electronics, telecommunications and semiconductor physics.
Grades/marks
English language ability
Motivation statement
Any relevant publications, thesis or project work, etc.
The information about these 5 points has to be given in the application form.

In addition candidates are asked to provide at least two (2) letters of reference from persons who are very well acquainted with their academic performance. These letters may be sent directly to the office of the EMMP or together with the other application documents under sealed envelopes.

Candidates that have scored well on the above points will be briefly interviewed via telephone. They will be asked questions about their motivation and about their previous experience as well as technical questions.


Step 1: Online registration

Fill out the online registration form and obtain your personal application ID.


Upload an electronic version of a completely filled in standard application form during online registration.

For the electronic submission of the standard application form no signature nor application ID is required.

Please pay attention so you don't lose your username, password and application ID.



Step 2: Paper submission of application documents

Your application file should consist of the following documents. All documents should mention your personal application ID. Files not mentioning the application ID will not be accepted!

A completed and signed standard application form.

A copy of the pasport or other official identification proof.

Two letters of recommendation using the standard form under sealed enveloppe (doc)

Legalised copies of diplomas and a translation in English. (Keep the orginal legalised copy with you; you will need this for erollment at the university and send us a copy together with your other documents.)

Copies of diploma supplements stating courses followed and scores obtained per course and a translation in English. (This is also known as a transcript of the degree)

Copies of language test scores (TOEF OR IELTS) or certificate stating that you received education in English. The TOEFL score can be sent directly to Ghent University (institution code: 2643). In that case, a copy of the TOEFL score sheet should also be included in your application documents! In case of IELTS an original test report form should be included in your application documents.

Contact details (name, telephone, email, address) of a professor (or dean) who is well acquainted with the study programme that was taken by the applicant

Contact details (name, telephone, email, address) of the persons who have been requested to provide reference letters. This may include the person meant under 7.

Remark that the posted application file becomes property of the secretariat of the programme. Therefore no original official documents should be sent. Upon admission to the programme, legalised copies of diplomas, certified copies of language tests and certified copies of certificates will be required.

Step 3: Follow Up and Changes
Once you have your own account, you will be able to edit your online profile. Also you will be able to follow up the progress of your application.

In view of the telephone interview and the receipt of official documents (if you're accepted) it's important that all contact information stays up-to-date.

Application deadline: Jan 5: no documents or applications will accepted after this deadline.


First selection outcome: Jan 10: all students who passes the first selection round will be invited for a telephone interview


Telephone interviews: Jan 10 - Jan 20: selected students will be interviewed by phone.


Final selection: Jan 31: all selected students from first selection will be notified of their result of admission and scholarship.
