Job description
A 3-year PhD position is available for a highly motivated student with interest in microbial ecology and biotic interactions in the group of Laurent Philippot in Dijon, France.

The goal of the project is to unravel biotic interactions within complex microbial communities for understanding and predicting microbial community assembly and functioning in terrestrial ecosystems. For this, the successful candidate will conduct controlled experiments and apply a combination of molecular, bioinformatic and functional analyses to explore the assembly of soil microbial communities.

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student, who has a thorough understanding of microbial ecology and a strong interest in biotic interactions. Applicants should hold an MSc degree in microbiology and should have a practical background in molecular techniques. Experience in community analyses is desired. Additional bioinformatics skills such as working knowledge of R and scripting languages, as well as a solid knowledge of statistical data analysis would be of additional advantage.

Applications are invited for a four-year, fully-funded PhD studentship in African history at Gent University, Belgium. The holder will be affiliated with the History Department and be part of a research group on the aftermath of slavery in East Africa, funded by the European Research Council. The topic of this PhD project is the apparent disappearance of former slaves from the Central Tanzanian region of Tabora in the early twentieth century, and the afterlives of slavery in social memory. Principal investigator on the project is Felicitas Becker (see http://research.flw.ugent.be/nl/feli.becker). There is no obligation to teach, but contributions to teaching can be arranged. The stipend amounts to ca. 2000 EUR per month, tax-free. The default start date is October 1, 2019, but there is some flexibility.

The Public Affairs Section of the United States Embassy in Dar es Salaam is seeking qualified candidates for the Hubert H. Humphrey program. The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program is a Fulbright program that brings accomplished mid-level professionals to the United States for a year of academic and professional work. The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) from provide primary funding for the Humphrey program within its congressional appropriation for exchanges.
