Description
The aim of the International PhD Program of the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology and the Friedrich Miescher Laboratory is to develop the minds and skills of promising young scientists by providing outstanding interdisciplinary training in cutting-edge biological research. The PhD program is open to highly qualified students from Germany and any other country. Complementing their scientific research, PhD students are required to attend courses offered on the Max Planck Campus and at the University of Tübingen, participate in research seminars and present their research findings at internal symposia.

Evolutionary Biology & Ecological Genetics.
Financial Considerations:
Most PhD students receive a stipend to cover living expenses from the Max-Planck-Society. The University of Tübingen charges only minimal fees, while no tuition or fees are charged by the Max-Plank-Institutes or the Friedrich-Miescher-Laboratory.
Short-listed candidates will be invited for a three-day period of interviews and information exchange. Travel expenses are reimbursed and free accommodation is provided.
They consider the following countries as “European countries”: countries belonging to the European Union, Albania, Andorra, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Georgia, Iceland, Israel, Liechtenstein, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Norway, Russia, San Marino, Serbia, Switzerland, Turkey and Ukraine.
Eligibility
Applicants must hold or expect to hold a Diplom or M.Sc. degree or a comparable degree from a minimum 4-year undergraduate program with a specialization in the biological sciences.
Outstanding B.Sc students in the biological sciences graduating within the top 10% of their class can also be admitted to the program, provided they are able to show independent research experience.
All degrees must be received before starting research as our institutes and within 6 months of the interview.
The program language is English. You will need to provide evidence that you are comfortable communicating in written and oral English. Graduate Record Examinations – Their GRE Institution Code is 4791. In general, successful applicants have scored above 500 on the verbal test and above 700 on the quantitative test.
Scholarship
Within one week og arriving in Tübingen, you are required to register at the city office. You will receive a registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung). Next, you will visit the Foreigners’ Office (Ausländerbehörde) located in the same building, to apply for a Residency Permit (Aufenthaltsgenehmigung). During your first visit, you will be handed forms and be given another appointment to present several documents:
the copy of the registration certificate;
documentation of your health insurance (see also ’5. Health Insurance’);
copy of your PhD contract with MPI or FML;
a passport photo.
For the first days or weeks you can stay in one of the Max Planck Guest House rooms. You are required to have health insurance coverage for the duration of your stay in Germany.It is necessary to open a regular account – Girokonto – at a local or online bank. You can take part in the German lessons offered at our institute, in which case you have to pay 30% of the fees and the rest is paid for by the MPI.
PhD students are generally funded by scholarships from the Max-Planck-Society. Scholarships are initially awarded for a period of two years and commonly extended for up to two more years. Students are also encouraged to apply for scholarships from other funding agencies. Monthly Scholarship Rate:
Year 1: 1303 €
Year 2: 1403 €
Year 3: 1468 €
The MPI for Developmental Biology and the FML do not charge tuition and fees. The University of Tübingen charges a fee of approximately 110 € per semester for enrolled PhD students.

Applicants must register online. All application materials, including reference forms, must be received by the PhD Program Office by the application deadline. Completed applications will be reviewed by a committee of group leaders. Short-listed candidates will be invited for a three-day period of interviews and information exchange. Travel expenses are reimbursed and free accommodation is provided. PhD Students must start their research within 6 months of receiving the offer.
They require scanned versions of the following certificates:
high school diploma,
university degree certficates,
translation of your university degree certificate if original is not in English, German, French or Spanish,
transcript of records: official list of coursework including grades,
General GRE score,
other major certificates.
All documents must be merged into one pdf-file not exceeding 20MB.
On your application you will be asked to enter the names of two referees. It is advisable to select referees that know you personally and are willing and able to write a description of your academic performance. Referees should be professionally established at the level of independent investigator, principal scientist, group leader, lecturer or above.
